Funky Cat:

Interview with Flea, following Hullabaloo: Flea, USC freshman, talking about his forthcoming solo album L. A. Times Music Blog 07:02 PM PT, Sep 23 2008 As co LA Times blog all things Trojan reported last night, is Michael Balzary - better known as Flea - indeed a newcomer to USC. I interviewed bassist past week on Hullabaloo, the upcoming benefit concert for the Silver Lake Music Conversatorium, he was his friend Keith Barry founded in 2001, and we chat about his lessons, his upcoming solo work and on whether or not to continue with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. - Margaret Wappler So you take classes at USC. What brought that up? I am glad that my music training in this way has developed, but it is so fun to learn this stuff, because I never knew what. In school I played trumpet. I learned things play on my trumpet that I really liked, but I learned what not to note the note heard and why he made that sound. Or how I created tension in a composition. The Chili Peppers did that in our structure of the songs are all based on emotion and intuition as opposed to real knowledge of the substance and academy. The structure is really nice to know. What lessons do you? I take 3 lessons: theory, composition and jazz trumpet. What you study in jazz trumpet? In jazz trumpet, I improvising on jazz changes and familiarization. I also study with a classical score Boyd Hood who plays with the LA Philharmonics. The jazz teacher at USC called John Thomas. He shows me a trumpet solo by Lee Morgan of the track "Party Time" from the album "The Procrastinator" elaborate. Will there ever students who say to you: "What are you doing here? You do not need this, you're a successful band." Well, not really of the people here, but people outside the school did. They look at me with something of: where are you doing now? Apart from the real musicians, who understand it. I think a lot of people see it as a commercial stunt --- you go to school but only for money to win, but you get enough money to make music, so why would you go to school? It seems a bit from back to front but for me it would. My entire musical life was a learning process and I put that process and fill the empty pages. There are things that I do not know what I want to know. Okay, the Chili Peppers working on a new album? No, we have a mega-break. A break of 2 years. And that was unchangeable? You said, "2 years and then we start talking about again? Uhhh, if you can say yes. We have just 2 years. As long as we have worked hard unmercifully. We were just standing there and to take a fresh look at things get. Have you at this point plans to come back together and something else to take? We take only 2 years and rest at the end, we are where we are. What about the solo work of yours? I'm at home plate to make and he is almost completed. It is largely instrumental but I got there as singer Patti Smith and the choir of school, but it is largely an instrumental album. I do not know so well how I should describe, but a lot of people describe it as a film, something like a soundtrack. It is not really commercial, it is really not on rock radio or something. This plate is based on the character of Helen Burns in "Jane Èvre." I'm crazy about Charlotte Brontë and all the Bronte Sisters. I gotta ask: you still have those pants with stuffed animals? Someone has stolen him. It is crazy, for years I lived in small appartementjes, after signing with Warner Brothers I could buy a house. I bought a nice house in Los Feliz where I was really mad about. The first night I rode home, and someone had broken into my car and my bass, learning my jacket and pants with those stuffed animals out stolen. I have long lived in many neighborhoods behind but I am never robbed. And here I had my heels are not yet vetted, and they steal my stuff. I gave the girl that the pants had made a new contract to make. Money or the pants I have ever seen.
